Steady-state three-phase flow in a mixed-wet porous medium: A pore-scale X-ray microtomography study

چکیده

We use three-dimensional X-ray imaging to investigate steady-state three-phase flow in a mixed-wet reservoir rock, while measuring both relative permeability and capillary pressure. Oil occupied the smallest pores, gas biggest, water medium-sized pores. report distinct pattern, where flows form of disconnected ganglia by periodically opening critical pathways. Despite having capillary-controlled displacements, significant fraction pore space was intermittently gas-oil oil-water phases. Both types intermittency occurred intermediate-sized Gas mainly displaces oil, oil as rate is increased, gas, decreased. At resolution images, no detectable trapped rock due its mixed-wettability which prevents either or completely surrounding suppressing snap-off trapping, has implications for design storage systems.

Three-dimensional mixed-wet random pore-scale network modeling of two- and three-phase flow in porous media. II. Results.

We use the model described in Piri and Blunt [Phys. Rev. E 71, 026301 (2005)] to predict two- and three-phase relative permeabilities of Berea sandstone using a random network to represent the pore space. We predict measured relative permeabilities for two-phase flow in a water-wet system. We then successfully predict the steady-state oil, water, and gas three-phase relative permeabilities meas...

Study of Two Phase Fluid Flow in Water Wet Reservoir Rocks by Using X-Ray In situ Saturation Monitoring

Displacement of oil and water in porous media of reservoir rocks is described by relative                      permeability curves, which are important input data for reservoir performance simulation and drive mechanism studies. Many core studies, such as multiphase relative permeability, capillary pressure and saturation exponent determination, depend on the volume fractions of multiphase flui...

A New Approach for Constructing Pore Network Model of Two Phase Flow in Porous Media

Development of pore network models for real porous media requires a detailed understanding of physical processes occurring on the microscopic scale and a complete description of porous media morphology. In this study, the microstructure of porous media has been represented by three dimensional networks of interconnected pores and throats which are designed by an object oriented approach. Af...

Three-dimensional mixed-wet random pore-scale network modeling of two- and three-phase flow in porous media. I. Model description.

We present a three-dimensional network model to simulate two- and three-phase capillary dominated processes at the pore level. The displacement mechanisms incorporated in the model are based on the physics of multiphase flow observed in micromodel experiments. All the important features of immiscible fluid flow at the pore scale, such as wetting layers, spreading layers of the intermediate-wet ...

Predictive pore-scale modeling of two-phase flow in mixed wet media

[1] We show how to predict flow properties for a variety of porous media using pore-scale modeling with geologically realistic networks. Starting with a network representation of Berea sandstone, the pore size distribution is adjusted to match capillary pressure for different media, keeping the rank order of pore sizes and the network topology fixed. Then predictions of single and multiphase pr...
